In 2020, New York and our nation have faced an election year like no other. The COVID-19 crisis has challenged us to think, work and live differently – and it has also extended our elections as voting by mail became the safest way to exercise our constitutional right to vote. HCN is proud of our work to swiftly adapt to these dynamics and successfully execute field programming that addressed the challenges.
Since it’s inception, HCN has worked with stakeholders across the United States to inform conversations about the Puerto Rican /Latino diaspora and provide a roadmap for voter engagement efforts.
Canvassing Assets –We used canvassers in each of the target areas to document traditional and non-traditional community resources currently available on the ground to be activated in key congressional districts with a significant Puerto Rican/Latino population. This included “bodegas”, store-front churches, civic organizations, community leaders, other stakeholders and influencers who are working with existing Latino families.
Engaging Assets –We began discussions with local leaders about migration of new neighbors, existing needs, work that is being done to address those needs, documenting at every step the best ways of assisting during this process. We also conducted a series of focus groups designed to identify effective messaging to engage the emerging Latino Communities in various key states.
Providing Support –We identified and supported projects that encourage engagement and future discussion among leaders and institutions, through strategic investments in target areas. We developed mail and digital communications to further engage neighbors and communicate “what’s happening”.
Expanding the Base –We launched a grassroots campaign, using assets to organize Neighborhood “Tertulias” that encourage neighborhood engagement, civic and political participation, from voter registration to public service. Engagement resulted in the identification of additional assets involved in helping new neighbors and Latino families. This is an ongoing process that solidifies and deepens relationships, planting roots in communities.
Now that the 2018 cycle has concluded with mixed results, we need to engage Latinos more significantly and consistently than ever before in order to turn key states blue in advance of the 2020 Presidential election. It is our firm belief that this work will also be relevant to the 2020 Census, with subsequent redistricting process.
