Luis A. Miranda, Jr. has almost four decades of experience as a leader in the public and private sectors. A native of Puerto Rico, Luis has held leadership positions at the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, the Community Service Society, Aspira of New York and the administrations of three different Mayors of New York City. He currently serves as Board Chair of the Latino Victory Fund, a national progressive political action committee working to grow Latino political power by increasing Latino representation at every level of government.
In 1990, Luis became the founding President of the Hispanic Federation, one of the nation’s leading Latino nonprofit organizations dedicated to addressing the human services and health needs of the Hispanic community. As President, Luis became one of New York City’s leading voices for increased support to Latino nonprofits and a widely admired partner for corporate and private philanthropic leaders.
A founding partner of MirRam Group, Luis has consulted on a number of successful legislative and political campaigns. Luis’ leadership extends beyond the world of public affairs. In 2000, he founded the Amber Charter School in East Harlem, one of the few charter schools in New York at the time to welcome unionized faculty. He is board chair of the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and board member of The Public Theater, The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, NYC & Company, and The City. Mr. Miranda chairs the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Department at the CUNY Graduate Center. He earned his BA degree from the University of Puerto Rico and pursued graduate work in psychology at New York University.
Since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, Luis and his family have partnered with The Hispanic Federation to create the UNIDOS Fund, raising over $43M for relief and rebuilding efforts as of December 2018. The goal of the fund is to support community based organizations that are supporting recovery and strengthening resilience. In addition to raising funds, the Mirandas continue to publicly advocate for adequate Federal response for the island. In October 2018, Luis and his son, Lin-Manuel Miranda, announced a partnership between Hispanic Federation, Starbucks, Nespresso, and Rockefeller Foundation to rebuild Puerto Rico’s coffee sector. In collaboration with Hamilton and the Flamboyan Foundation, Luis created the Flamboyan Arts Fund, seeking to raise $15M for arts and culture in Puerto Rico to be distributed over a 3 -5 year period.
He and his wife, Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda, have been married for 40 years and have two adult children, Luz Miranda-Crespo and Lin-Manuel Miranda. They reside in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights/Inwood.
